College Students: Earn While You Learn

by Jim Dunn

Everyone knows that college is expensive, and nobody wants more student loans than necessary. That is why it is believed that a higher percentage of college students work than ever before.

Unfortunately, students...including those in online degree programs...have a tough time finding a job which will not conflict with their academic obligations. But, there are exceptions. Among them are the jobs below.

1. Security guards are needed around the clock, and there are almost always openings.

2. Virtually every college and university in the country offers work-study jobs to students. They are generally not very difficult, and often they are fairly interesting.

3. If you are comfortable on the telephone, consider a customer service job. Duties generally include order taking, and resolving customer problems.

4. Restaurants need greeters, servers and kitchen staff day and night, so many students turn to them for employment. However, students are not always aware that caterers need folks to perform the same service and their needs are greatest on weekends and at night; times that do not conflict with most students' schedules.

5. Students can create their own jobs by starting a business. They can hire fellow students and start a babysitting or eldercare service, design websites for local businesses, tutor middle school or high school students, design restaurant menus, sell on eBay or at flea markets, or engage in link building campaigns for webmasters. Do a little brainstorming and you may surprise yourself at how many business ideas come to mind.

You can learn some valuable lessons working while in college, including time management, which will make you more attractive to future employers. Just be certain that you limit your hours to leave yourself time to meet your academic obligations. Good luck.
