The Diminutive and Glamorous Water Dog: The Toy Poodle

by Kristy Howard

Fancy and glamorous looking, that's what the well-known toy poodle is. Who would not recognize this breed in its fluffy and well-maintained cotton ball-like hair? When it walks, it walks with such commanding grace and poise that people can't help but admire the spectacular sight of this dog.

The toy poodle is famous and always visible in the fields of dog shows and dog sports. It is a challenger and often champions the agility, obedience and tracking competitions, and surprisingly, herding as well. This dog is regarded as one of the most intelligent dog therefore aside from just well-groomed hair; you can expect hard work from this breed, too.

Generally, the poodle is a water dog type and it explains their expertise in swimming and love for water. Before this breed became a well-pampered pet, it was once used as a retriever of shot fowl and other games. Today, treading waters are less of their tasks because they are mainly kept as family pets and show dogs.

There are three size categories of the poodle: standard, miniature and toy. All of these sizes share the same type of hair which is single-coated, curly and low-shedder with textures of soft, coarse and wooly. The colors of the poodle may be anything and the patterns may appear as solid, parti or phantom.

Poodles are highly energetic and are easily bored and because of this, they always find themselves in some mischievous works. They are excellent towards children and are great in befriending other humans and animals. They also love to play and it is best to give them lots of it but give them plenty of rest afterwards too.

Additionally, the poodles make outstanding watchdogs and are swift to adapt in changes in the environment. Being intelligent creatures, the poodles are easy to handle when it comes to training. When it comes to potty training, you can count on the poodles to get the rules quickly.

It is believed that the poodle had been in existence for 400 years all over Western Europe. The exact place of its origin is debated to be France, Germany, Denmark or the ancient region of Piedmont. However, France is now the officially recognized place of origin of the breed.

The French, centuries back, developed some good uses for the poodles and these include being circus performers. The English name poodle is derived from "pudel" a German word for one who always gets wet. In France, the poodle is called "Caniche" meaning duck dog.
