It May Not Be A Fraud Or Scam, But Free Credit Reports Are Not Necessarily Free!

by Dr Caroline Coats

There are loads of adverts out there assuring us of FREE CREDIT REPORTS. It annoys me " the way I see it Free Credit Reports dont exist. If anything, I believe it could be a make money scam carried out by immoral Credit Report companies.

The moment we have finished completing our personal information, we then have to give them all our bank details prior to anything being released. This being after we have been seduced onto their websites via the most annoying and disliked pop-ups which must cost them the earth.

This, supposedly is to verify our identity, or is it a way to assure them of recurring billing? According to Google, Recurring Billing means, ...Transactions for which a cardholder grants permission to the merchant to periodically charge his account number for recurring goods or services...

Because many of us forget to call off the subscription, we may not become conscious of the fact that our credit cards have been charged, mostly once a month, but sometimes even a couple of times per month. I will cover this in a future article. So it can take quite a while before we realise we have been paying for this unintentionally. It is a good way for these Free Credit Report companies to make some serious cash out of our forgetfulness. I think its shocking!

In these times of financial instability they are allowed to take advantage of our vulnerability. Given much tighter legislation and more companies offering a credit report service, we might stand a chance of getting a better deal!

Onwards. There is always a catch when a service is advertised as being FREE and sadly the very services that we need to keep our money and us safe from Identity Theft, Internet Fraud, Cheque Fraud and Credit Card Fraud can be construes by some as being a scam.

Not only do we get charged for this Free Service, we have to give them our credit card details! Hell, I want to see what they are offering me before I give them permission to debit my credit card, dont you? An example of standard Terms and Conditions these Companies issue contain examples such as.. ...after your 10-day FREE trial period it's just 25.95 per month. Remember, you can call us within the first 10 days to cancel, and you will not be charged the 25.95. To ensure continuous service, at the end of your trial period your membership will be automatically charged each month at the then-current membership fee...

We also have to consider that at times these companies do not offer a satisfactory level of service, and their blunders can blight our whole financial credibility. This can have a destructive effect on you in the future and I will highlight these in an upcoming article which will be issued soon. In the meantime, never forget to terminate your subscription, or ACCEPT THE CHARGES!
