Most of the plastic water bottles that are made by bottle-maker companies leaches Bisphenol-A. This is a very harmful chemical that is unsafe and can affect the unborn of pregnant women. Bisphenol- A has an analogous structure which is similar to that of the hormone estrogen and hence its interference with the body affects the hormonal make up.

Its affects are adverse and can potentially cause breast cancer and uterine cancer, corpulence and may lead to diabetes. The leaching of the chemical Bisphenol-A is due to the scraping of the plastic or the exacerbation of the chemical due to the use of harsh detergents.

One way to avoid dangerous chemicals such as BPA is to switch to water bottles made of HDPE plastic. The best way to be totally sure that you are safe from BPA is to switch to stainless steel or glass water bottles. It is a good idea to avoid lexan bottles which are known to leach BPA. Luckily there are many companies on the market who are aware of the need for alternatives to plastic water bottles.

One of the most well known water bottle manufacturers is Nalgene which recently released the Everday Line series which doesn't contain any BPA. Another company that makes safe plastic water bottles is Camelbak which has also recently released its Sipper Better Bottle and Podium Bottle. These are just a few examples of safe water bottles that are free of the hazardous BPA or any other chemicals.

One of the best alternatives to plastic are stainless steel water bottles. Stainless steel doesn't alter the taste of the water, are light and durable. Stainless steel is also recyclable and made of recycled material. Another alternative are aluminum water bottles. A popular brand is known as Sigg and comes in many different styles and colors.

If you do choose to drink from plastic water bottles it is useful to be aware of which plastic bottles are safe to drink from. Bottles that have a "#1" on the bottle are only safe for single use. Bottles with "#7" and "#3" should be avoided completely since they are known to leach BPA. Bottles with a "#2", "#4", "#5" or "#6" are safe to drink out of. Nevertheless it is recommend to avoid drinking from plastic completely and sticking with stainless steel or glass water bottles which are known to not leach any chemicals.

So now you know that plastic bottles with lexan and Bisphonel-A is very harmful and hazardous. Just switch to stainless steel or glass bottles which may be a little uncomfortable at first but is surely better than the risks of plastic.
