Employees who have to strain to focus their eyes will end up with blurred vision, eyestrain and headaches. Minor vision problems can drain an employee's energy, add stress and lower productivity and satisfaction. Employees who lose significant vision before eye health problems are diagnosed will draw disability benefits at a greater long-term cost.
Sixteen years after the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment (DSE)) Regulations came into force, some employers still don't have a firm handle on what is required. And of those that do, their approach is often ad hoc and costly.
Employers are obliged under the DSE regulations to provide sight tests for any employees who use computer screens and other displays. If glasses are prescribed to operate the display screen equipment, the employer is then required to provide those glasses for them.
Most employers are aware of this requirement. According to 2008 Health & Safety Executive (HSE) research, just over half (53%) of organisations provided tests. For larger organisations (300+ employees), 100% of those surveyed provided sight tests.
Study shows that eye-care benefits topped the list of desired benefits for employees with children more than six years old.
Actually eye care can be one of the most affordable health benefits an employer can offer. The cost per employee can be kept so low(with few exceptions ) that some companies are passing on all the costs of their eye-care benefits plan to employees, who pay the premiums out of a flexible spending account or through payroll deduction. In this way, employees get what they want and need at no added cost to the employer.
Everyone should have regular eye examinations. People need good vision to do their jobs efficiently, especially in today's high-tech work environment. Hence providing eye care benefits will gear up the work environment and work efficiency and will ultimately increase the profitability of the organisation.
