All high school students are familiar with the dreaded Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Naturally international students (more information here) and IB students are not concerned with this, but generally speaking, AP testing is a concern for high school students.
Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind about AP tests:
1) Take lots of AP classes. The more the better. It looks good on your transcript, and it tells prospective colleges you have high academic ability.
2) Don't put off taking your AP tests. Start as soon as possible. They are not really all that hard.
3) Don't take too many AP tests. Take as many AP classes as you can, but just take enough tests to make a good showing. Remember that you don't have to have perfect AP scores to be accepted at Harvard. With AP tests, as well as SAT and GPA, you just have to pass an average level.
4) So, in general, it's a good idea to take a few AP tests and strive for higher scores on each one, rather than take a lot of them and risk getting lower scores. If you are considering Yale, as a case in point, you will be happy to know that they prefer to see you do well on what you try rather than making lots of attempts.

If you follow this advice on AP tests - take as many AP classes as possible, start your AP tests early, and focus on quality, not quantity - you will do well.
When you score high on your AP tests, it lets colleges know that you are able to manage demanding courses at the college level. Ivy League schools want to see that you are able to deliver academic excellence. It is a definite must for getting into the school of your dreams.
