How To Quit Snoring

by Denzil De Vries

People you know may talk about your snoring as if you do it on purpose. They talk as if you could simply decide to quit snoring at any time since your snoring is totally under your control. As a matter of fact, many people do not even know that they snore. Learning about it can be embarrassing and make you avoid sleeping near anyone who is unsympathetic to your plight.

Snoring is bad for both the snorer and his or her partner. Both people lose sleep when snoring happens, which is not only bad for the relationship but also for psychological and physical health. Even if the snorer sleeps fairly well, the partner is usually awakened by the loud snoring and can have trouble going back to sleep.

Merely deciding to quit snoring is not realistic; the problem is much more difficult. Everyone would have stopped snoring if the solution was that easy. Snoring is such an annoying and exhausting condition that you should consult with your doctor to find a solution. You and your partner should visit the doctor together so that he or she can answer any questions the doctor may have regarding your snoring. Since your partner knows what your snoring habits are, he or she can better communicate the issues to your physician.

If snoring is chronic and punctuated with gasps for air, it may be that the snorer has sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening disorder that should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. Treatment is necessary for people diagnosed with this problem to eliminate any obstruction that is preventing the free flow of air through the air passages.

One of the products with success in treating sleep apnea is CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Using this treatment, a mask is worn by the snorer before bed time. A pump forces the air through the mask and eliminates the obstruction so that the snorer can quit snoring and breathe well all through the night.

Sleeping can be difficult for a person who suffers from snoring problems and not just for the snorer but the person who is sleeping in the same room. Sleep deficits and other issues brought about by chronic sleep loss due to snoring can cause many health problems. Sleep is the time your body and mind does major repair to stay functioning properly, so being able to quit snoring is crucial.

Driving while tired is as dangerous as drunk driving. When the body is continually denied sleep, it will demand sleep by making you drowsy regardless of where you are at the time or what you are doing, including driving. When you are drowsy, your reflexes are slowed, which can lead to a serious mishap if you are driving. This is but one reason to seek a doctor's help to quit snoring.
