Intrastromal ablation in lasik treatment - do you dare to break your glasses now?

With the advent of intrastromal ablation technique you can surely dare to break your glasses, and go out to make daring eye contacts with the your girlfriend. We who suffer a lot handling glasses or contact lenses, may find a respite now. We are afraid of the lasik treatment to bring down our eye power simply because we don't want to take risk with the surgery. Now we have a safer choice.

Intrastromal ablation is an advancement of lasik eye surgery. It has been brought into application by femtosecond corrections such as Femtosecond Lenticule Extraction, FLIVC, or IntraCOR.
In this technique two opposing focused laser rays are applied, which creates a plasma in tissue (actually it creates a void space in which there are free electrons moving in a partially charged gaseous environment).
This leads to building up of shock waves, that gets transformed into an acoustic transient (i.e. a samll sound is created). The shock wave has a diameter ranging from 0.5?m to a few microns. Thereafter the acoustic transient is very short lived only a few microseconds. It produces a cavity of 10-100?m. Then it collapses to give rise to a small gas chamber (spherical) which contains carbon dioxide and other gases.
This gas bubble when focused on the cornea makes the corneal stroma cells to absorb the gases, which leads to the change of shape of the cornea required to treat the rough cornea problems.
Eye conditions such as astigmatism, presbyopia, myopia, hyperopia finding cure by this. This surgery promises to find a painless and risk free cure. Again as a statutory warning as we give everytime, go for intrastromal ablation after consulting an experienced opthalmologist.
Can this tissue removal be done accurately and predictably enough to facilitate a pre-determined change in corneal shape?
Dr. Luis Ruiz says,
"By means of the femtosecond laser, a customized pattern is applied into the cornea inducing a focal reorganization of the biomechanical fores. In dependence of the applied pattern, the corneal surface can be locally flattened or steepened".
In his latest phase 3 trial, he has reported that 94% has responded with a highly positive response, while 80% showed almost cured results after a post operative period of six months.
What Dr. Ruiz states may be so, but it still doesn't answer the question posed above – can this technique result in a controllable, predictable result. We will just have to wait and see if the use of the femtosecond laser can do what others with other laser systems have tried and failed to do in the past.

Related?LASIK Can Be Part of Emergency Preparedness for Disasters like New Orleans or 9/11September 16th, 2005 According to Major Steven Stetson, MD, an ophthalmologist formerly in the Air Force, LASIK can be an important component of emergency preparedness for people who are dependent on glasses or contact lenses. "LASIK is useful in two ways," Stetson explained. Advanced Surface Ablation is More Effective than LASIK in Post Keratoplasty PatientsJuly 7th, 2008 According to a study done by Michael A.Lawless, MB MB, BS, FRACO, FRACS, FRCOphth, Advanced Surface Ablation with Mitomycin-C is more superior and effective than LASIK in the eyes of post- Keratoplasty(PK) patients. The study was done for 3 months involving 44 eyes of 16 female patients and 26 male patients. Epi-LASIK: Fast Recovery Time & Improves Patient's ComfortSeptember 18th, 2007 According to several eye surgeons, Epi-LASIK is a viable alternative to photorefractive keratectomy with alcohol or mechanical scraping, boasting faster recovery time and pain that is manageable with medication. Dr. Hardten, an OSN Corneal/External Disease Section Member, said epi-LASIK makes epithelial edges that are well-demarcated. Presby-LASIK Cures HyperopiaSeptember 22nd, 2007 Bruce W. Jackson, MD, and colleagues has performed presby-LASIK on 28 hyperopic patients and observed that it results in good near and distant vision. Surgery involved applying bilateral aspheric ablations to treat patients' presbyopia. Hard Facts on Laser Eye Surgery (Lasik Surgery)July 19th, 2005 Here are the hard facts on Laser Eye Treatment procedure known as Lasik Surgery

Lasik is surgery to a very delicate part of the eye. Hundreds of thousands of people have had Lasik, most very successfully. New technology promises to treat myopia, hyperopia better October 31st, 2008 A new technology called Zyoptix Advanced Control Eyetracking (ACE) promises to treat the problem of severe myopia and astigmatism. The new technology is marked by the the ability to track rotation of the eyeball during laser eye surgery. Explaining the significance of ACE, Dr Michael Law Sie Haur said that prior to the new technology eye rotation during surgery affected the predictability of outcomes, which was why doctors often discouraged patients with significant short-sightedness and astigmatism from opting for LASIK. Photorefractive Keratectomy: Laser Eye Surgery Alternative Gains ProminanceSeptember 18th, 2007 Photorefractive Keratectomy, an alternative LASIK has shown better result in the case of Cindy Duong, who was suffering from nearsightedness. Cindy Duong went to see her doctor for LASIK, however her doctor said to her that the cornea in her left eye was too thin to both cut the flap and contour her cornea, as LASIK (short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery requires. LASIK Surgery with Conductive Keratoplasty Promises No Eyeglasses ForeverDecember 6th, 2005 LASIK eye surgery has become hugely popular in the last decade as a surefire way to get rid of glasses. However by middle age (soon after 40) most people (including LASIK treated patients) develops presbyopia, the inability to read or see things up close.
