"Fit-Tip" of the Day: Commercial Squat

Bet you've never heard of commercial squats. Today's "Fit-Tip" is a simple way to incorporate some basic movement and physical activity into an American past-time that happens to consume a little bit too much time for a lot of Americans. I'm talking about the hours upon hours that many of
us spend in front of the television. But what if a fraction of that down-time could actually be seized as valuable fitness time? Literally, down-up-down-time. What am I talking about? I'm talking about the commercial squat; the one time in your life TiVo won't do you good. If you're going to spend time watching TV, why not take advantage of the 2-5 minute commercial gigs as an opportunity to squeeze in some extra physical activity into your day? I hear people all the time complain about not having enough time in the day to exercise. Well, here ya go. Here's how to perform the commercial squat, a basic compound movement using you, of course, and the couch/chair you're probably sitting on.The commercial squat isn't a novel exercise. Just invert its name and you have it - squat during commercial breaks. Assuming you're sitting on your couch/chair, upon the start of any commercial break, stand upright and then return to your seated position in a controlled movement. When you're bum touches down on planet couch/chair, pause for no more than a second and then repeat the movement. Sounds easy? Well, it is. The trick is performing this up-down-up-down exercise for the full duration of the commercial break. While this may appear to be no more than a silly way to pass time while your reality TV show waits somewhere for you in reality land, consider that in an hour's time of your reality, the commercial squat could translate to anywhere from 10-20 minutes of continuous, calorie-burning exercise. Can you imagine if you dedicated yourself to performing the commercial squat for a week? What about a month? Or a year even? Here are some tips to perform the commercial squat:1) First try performing the commercial squat without the assistance of your hands; however, if you need to push up to get up, do it! The goal is to get you moving."Fit-Tip" of the Day: Commercial Squat
