Proper Throwing Technique is Critical to Your Career

by Nate Barnett

It is critical to throw with proper pitching mechanics if you want to throw at any high level in Baseball. Not only will you minimize your chances of an arm injury if you throw the ball correctly, you will be able to throw harder and have better control of every pitch you have in your arsenal.

Throwing technique shouldnt be the same for everyone. I know a lot of pitching instructors that teach every pitcher the same and try to mold them. They may look at a great pitcher like Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan thinking that every pitcher should look and throw exactly the same way. There are some pitchers who throw sidearm, three-quarter arm slot and others who throw at a ninety degree angle. As a pitching instructor, you dont want to mess with the arm slots of any pitcher unless they have been instructed to throw over the top at a ninety degree angle and shouldnt be there.

A lot of parents and coaches ask me how proper technique will help their athletes throw the ball faster. This is a very valid question and one that requires some explaining. The majority of power comes from the arm in most little league pitchers, this not only puts undue stress on the arm, it lowers the velocity of each pitch they throw. It makes perfect since for every pitcher to throw with their entire body, not just their arm. It would make sense then, that if a pitcher did use their entire body in unison to the pitch that they would generate more velocity on the ball. It is not uncommon for a pitcher to gain at least five miles an hour once they understand and put to practice common pitching technique.

Without proper pitching mechanics, pitch workloads, functional strength and flexibility, appropriate nutrition, and lets face it, good genetics you are prone to arm injuries. You can avoid a lot of the arm pain with proper pitching mechanics simply by using your body in a way that will allow you to transfer energy appropriately toward your target. It is still important to note that even if you have perfect mechanics you can still be predisposed to injuries to the shoulder and elbow due to overuse, not warming up effectively and many other factors.

In conclusion, proper pitching mechanics are essential to establish consistency in control and velocity of every pitch. If you are a pitcher, make sure you take time and learn about biomechanics and you take pitching instruction from someone qualified in your area. It will be well worth your time and investment of money.
