Resveratrol is a naturally formed phytolexin by the plants as an auto immune response of the plants to the bacterial or fungal attack. Resveratrol is found in the skins of grapes and different kinds of berries. Resveratrol was discovered from the roots of Japanese Knotweed in the year 1940. After a prolonged research it was found that this component is found in all the berries in some amount.
The Japanese knotweed is also known as kojo kon. Resveratrol is also found in red wine in a concentrated form. Resveratrol has been the secret of the French people staying young for a long time. Resveratrol is generally extracted from knotweed in a very cost effective way.
In the extraction firstly the knotweed roots are sliced heated and tested for any contamination. Then the dried chunks of the Japanese knotweed are treated with ethanol or methanol to extract the resveratrol contents. The separated resveratrol liquid is then run through a dry column of silica under high pressure. To obtain that in powder form it is dried in vacuum and the solvent is removed. It is then combined with fillers like rice flour or hydroxypropylcellulose to manufacture pills and capsules.
The production method is a little bit different in the case of resveratrol from grapes. As the y resveratrol content in the grapes are comparatively low in proportion it is very important that it is extracted in a complete vacuum scenario to prevent any evaporation of the content.
Scientists at the University of Alicante in Spain have now developed a biological method of producing high-quality resveratrol from grapevine cells. This method is cheaper and more reliable than traditional extraction from grapes. The perceived higher value of grape-based supplements could make this a viable alternative to grapes as a source of premium-grade resveratrol.
