It has been reported mostly that strawberry birthmarks are not at all dangerous but when it comes to eye, it even makes the doctors to have folds over their forehead. It has been seen that starting from small epithelial swellings along with growth of blood vessels near the eye, it may lead to clog blood near the retina. Hence this leads to harming the nerve fibers finally to blindness. So before its too late get your baby treated to avoid late hour complications.
Strawberry marks affect 2% or more of babies. They are raised, soft red lumps on the skin, usually the size of a 50p piece, and look like a strawberry.They are also called capillary haemangioma or cavernous haemangioma if they are deeper in the skin or appear blue in colour. The blood vessels in these birthmarks are increased in size and number.
They are not a sign of ill-health and they are not linked to cancer. They can occur anywhere on the skin but are more important when they affect the face or the nappy area. These birthmarks are often not obvious at birth, but grow in the first month of life. In rare cases they grow quite large and may bleed or become infected or ulcerated.
Treatment is usually unnecessary as most strawberry marks will shrink and fade on their own. Large strawberry marks in certain places, for instance near the eye, may require treatment to avoid affecting vision in that eye.In many cases it threatens the child of childhood blindness.
Injections may shrink the blood vessels. Surgery is considered in rare cases to reduce the size of the birthmark. Laser treatment can be used to speed up healing of ulcerated birthmarks and to stop bleeding but is not used routinely for these birthmarks.
In many cases, due to the severity of the reaction, steroid injections are pushed along with laser treatments for speedy recovery. But these cases are rarer still.
Moreover the misconception is more severe compared to the damage caused due to the disease or the threat it poses. Its no curse but a mere disease. This disease needs general awareness and we feel that you are the right person to spread the message that this is no evil. Your baby can be cured and enlighten him or her with knowledge. Keep them away from the wrong beliefs, and you can find a more enlightened society who would always take the right stance for eradicating a disease.
