Consuming alcohol while under orthodontic treatment?

My family came up with this brilliant idea that consuming alcohol can somehow interfere with orthodontic treatment (teeth aligning). I do not drink heavily, and the most recent "binge drinking" involved a half a bottle of Chianti (12.5 alcohol) and a bottle of beer. I cannot believe I'm asking this, but is their argument valid?
