Bad news, redundancies, job losses, cut backs shorter hours these are all things that we are being shown on the news. Companies are struggling to stay afloat and make it through these rough times. I live in New Zealand and although we are being told that our country is not being as hard hit as others we still have 1200 people loosing their jobs a week.
At this rate, there will be no one left working as our country is such a small one with only 4 million people.
How very depressing this all is you may be wondering how you are going to be able to get through the next few months let alone years.
I have 2 children coming out of university shortly at the end of the year and although highly qualified, where are the jobs, non existent. White collar workers used to be immune to redundancies but now whole companies are folding. The whole of the fabric of society is changing and with it we need to re think things possibly outside the normal square of life to be the ones that succeed.
During wars and depressions there are always some who benefited from the downturn and even some of them making their fortunes. For example my fathers uncle designed engines in the Second World War in Britain and became a millionaire. Companies that made ammunitions and arms made money beyond their wildest dreams.
Sometimes it is being at the right place at the right time but often these people have the foresight and tenacity to make something out of nothing.
My friend, the world is changing and we need to think differently, you may be looking for employment but what about being your own boss? What about buying your own job?
My husband, at 56 found himself with out a job and instead of getting depressed he went out looking for a small business to buy. He bought a painting a decorating business for $35,000 NZ dollars. That was a year ago. Unfortunately painting your house is the last thing you want to do when you do not have much money. So I bought into a totally different business which is booming and growing beyond anticipation. I had no previous knowledge of the skills I am using now but have had the most amazing training and support which continues to, be ongoing.
So if you are looking for a business to buy and take control of your life back you need to be wary about what you get into. Do your homework well as there are good ventures as well as bad. You need good compensation plans and good commissions can you retire on a good pension?
