Buying for kids can be difficult for several reasons. Firstly, although their opinion is important is it not always logical or reliable. One day everything will need to be Spiderman based and within twenty four hours it will change to Batman! Secondly, they do no often think of the practicality of their choice.
I have 3 basic rules which I stick by when choosing my kids back packs - so far they have always worked, each time producing something they will wear and I think is suitable.
1. Always Buy Plain Colors - Whatever the color of a backpack you can always put stickers on it, add badges and dangle key rings. This is a great way for them to personalize their bag, it also makes it easy to find when thrown in with other kids. Also it is a great way put all the keyrings and badges to use.
2. Think About Size - If you buy a back pack which is too big your child will fill it up and then complain that it is too heavy, you will then end up carrying it for them. Equally, if it is too small there will be tears about not being able to keep their art work flat.
3. Spending Enough And Not Too Much - How much you spend is quite crucial. Firstly you want the quality to be reasonable, so don't go too cheap. But you don't want to spend to much as it will get pretty battered going to and from school and consequently will need to be replaced every year. Remember that downgrading can be difficult for a child to understand so don't start anything you aren't prepared to continue.
A great extra quality would be a washable bag. Unfortunately these are quite hard to find.
One last word of advice, it may be best if your child doesn't come shopping with you. If you take your kid to the shop there is a chance that they will see something you don't think is suitable and the whole thing will turn into a nightmare. Buying it in advance and then giving it as a gift for achieving something may be more successful.
Good luck and happy shopping.
