Many Purposes Of Dog Collars

by Moses Wright

Dog collars have come a long way! Previously, the sole purpose of dog collars was to attach a leash and hold the dogs license. Now, dog collars are designed to perform specific functions to help with dog training or keep the dog safe.

Several dog collars are used for holding the dogs license, attaching the leash, and creative expression. Collars are available in many colors and some are rhinestone, jeweled, or have charms attached.

Anti-bark collars are designed to stop excessive barking. The dog owner pushes a button that administers a shock or sprays the dog with citronella as a deterrent to barking. Though some dog owners may have found these collars helpful, these are not recommended methods of training.

Some dog collars are designed to keep the dog close to home. Some dog collars emit a loud, high-pitched noise when the dog leaves the perimeter of the home. The idea is to teach the dog to stay within the boundaries of the property.

Invisible fences are widely used systems for keeping dogs within the boundaries of the property. The invisible fence system uses a special collar that delivers warning noises and electric shocks to teach the dog to stay within the boundary of the invisible fence.

A new feature for collars is GPS. A GPS system helps the dog owner be able to track the dog if the dog is lost or runs away. The dog owner uses a cell phone or the Internet to use the GPS system to locate the dog.

Some dog collars are used for training a dog to walk properly with the owner. Choker chains are sometimes used, but some newer models of training collars are less likely to be abused. Some dog owners find dog harnesses useful for dogs that tend to pull on leashes.

Sometimes, a dog owner may have a dog that is not responding well to training. The dog may be aggressive. Pinch collars or pronged collars that put pressure on the neck of the dog might be used to train aggressive or very stubborn dogs.
