Using Bird Seed to Attract Different Types of Birds to Your Yard

Feeding birds in the back yard is a way to help enhance the over all beauty and quality of life in your yard. The type of songbirds you attract depends on the quality and type of wild bird seed that you chooseBlack oil sun flower seeds are a popular general choice for most gardeners. They are a feed that is accepted by the greatest variety of songbirds. Black oil sunflower seeds are enjoys by cardinals, chickadees, and purple finches. They will also attract most kinds of songbird.
The black oil sun flower seed is high in oil rich matter which is an excellent source of energy for wild birds during the colder months. The shell is thin and easy for even the smallest birds to open. If you are just interested in attracting songbirds in general to your yard a hanging tube of black oil sun flower seeds will do the trick.Blended mixes can be part of your back yard feeding plan for songbirds. These blends will have black oil sunflower seeds. Other ingredients in the feed depend on what sorts of songbirds you specifically want to attract. Mixes that contains millet will attract morning doves and sparrows. Blue jays will be attracted to mixes with stripped sunflowers and cardinals are attracted to safflower. Good blends need to be adjusted to their season of use as birds nutritional needs change as the availability of food sources in the wild changes for them with the seasons.Gold finches and other finches can be attracted with Nyger seed. Nyger is a seed that is rich in oil and very small. A blend that includes red millet along with the Nyger seed is also available. The mix can be used as a more cost effective blend than pure Niger to attract finches of all variety. This type of seed because of its small size requires use of a tube feeds with very small feeding portals. Niger and Njer are alternative spellings of this same seed.Look for quality bird seed that is fresh in appearance. Avoid bird seed with sorghum and other grain based fillers. These ingredients only add weight to the bag and are more likely to attract squirrels than birds. Avoid dusty appearing seed as seed dust again just adds weight to the bag and will not be eaten by the birds.Using Bird Seed to Attract Different Types of Birds to Your Yard
