The War Against Weeds in Your Home Garden: 12 Tips to Help You Win

Weeds are the bane of every gardener. Anyone who has grown a garden has spent hours bent over the rows of vegetables pulling weeds that just keep coming back. Here are some tips to help you have few weeds. The soil should be tilled before you plant. This helps the vegetables grow. But, it also buries weed seeds to a depth from which they cannot sprout. You can stop the
weeds before you even see them.Using a garden rake to weed and thin is an easier method than breaking your back over the rows. This should be done with your plants are a quarter to a half inch high. However, do not use this method with peas, beans, or onion sets.Use an in-row weeder on your vegetables to help keep the weeds at bay. This tool resembles a rake, but has thinner tines that are farther apart and bent. You should drag this tool lightly over the rows 3 or 4 times before they are 3 weeks old. It can be used around transplants, as well.To smother weeds that are perennials, plant two or more crops of buckwheat. This is a thick growing plant. It will not allow the weeds to get the sunlight they need to thrive.Use a small section of our garden to grow thick pea and bean crops. These will, also, shade the weed plants. The next growing season, you will be able to plant vegetables that do not tolerate weeds and their competition well. This would include carrots, onions, and lettuce. Because the peas and beans did not allow the weeds to get sunlight, there will be fewer weeds the next year.Manure is a great fertilizer. But, this is true only if it is very dry or very well composted. It usually contains weed seeds that you do not want to plant in your garden. So, be sure the manure is well processed before putting it in your garden. Some types of mulch can be loaded with seeds, also. Pine needles, grass clippings and others of this type are much better to use. Straw and hay will be filled with weed seeds. If any weeds are growing in or near your garden, pull them up before they go to seed. This includes the grass in your lawn. If you let these go to seed, you are asking to have them start to grow in your garden. The War Against Weeds in Your Home Garden: 12 Tips to Help You Win
