The prom is a rite of passage for many young men and women alike, and these formal traditions often extend into adult life during balls or gala events.
The high school prom is an event that many young men consider with dread, not only with regard to the cost involved with renting transportation and clothing but also with regard to it being, in many cases, the first time one might be required to wear a full suit or tuxedo. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the prom - or any formal ball or gala later in life - is an excellent opportunity to flex your style and to really impress (or attract!) that special someone by putting in some effort.
Forget the Bizarre, Unkempt, Comedic Look
One of the cliches surrounding prom night is the tendency for the class comedians or clowns to specifically dress down for the event, in the hopes of drawing a few laughs or attention their way. The reality is that not only does this diminish the atmosphere and gravitas of the evening to some degree - a negative association – but it also casts the individual in a less than favourable light by those taking the appropriate, adult response to the event. Save the foolishness for the afterparty!
It is highly unlikely that a potential date would be impressed by such an appearance and so it is best to avoid this circumstance entirely. You should want to look your very best, and make a consistent effort to pull it all together.
Suit or Tuxedo – So Many Choices!
A suit is entirely appropriate for a high school prom, with the caveat that it be a quality, modern garment that fits one's stature appropriately. A dark suit (deep navy, charcoal, or black) is also appropriate for gala functions as well as most balls, weddings, or other semi-formal or even "formal" event.
The benefits of choosing to wear a suit rather than a tuxedo are many; one can keep the garment after the event and use it in many other situations following (a job interview, the workplace, a romantic dinner, a speech) and a suit is much more versatile with regards to colour matching and accessorizing. Suits are also typically altered professionally to compliment the body shape of the wearer.
Renting a tuxedo is another very popular choice with a few general drawbacks – a rental garment is typically a sloppier fit than a purchased suit and the fit is also contingent on the skill of the associate who might take the measurements. If one chooses to go this route, it is highly advisable to place the order through a reputable menswear dealer rather than a less reputable business. Reputable rental companies include Syd Silver and Freeman; Reputable menswear companies include Tip Top Tailors, Moore's, Joseph A. Banks, and the like.
In general, most people are unable to distinguish the difference between a suit and a tuxedo – more people will be impressed with the fit and the ability to choose more adventurous colours and accessories that come with purchasing a quality suit. Purchasing a quality tuxedo is also an option, however one should be aware that they are most expensive, far more so than a suit of clothes.
A truly formal event (otherwise known as a "Black Tie" event) requires a tuxedo and specific accompaniments such as a cummerbund, slacks with silk braids, as well as patent (high gloss) leather shoes. These occasions are far less common in contemporary society and are relatively foreign to the population at large.
