Who Likes LARPing?

by David Borg

LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing and is pursued by a wide variety of men and women who enjoy losing themselves in a game. It may be a strictly controlled gamin scenario, with rules and regulations, or it may just be a simple meeting of historical recreationists. No matter what the purpose is, there is a number of different people who enjoy these games.

Many people who get involved with LARPing tend to be an imaginative, if somewhat socially different, group. They generally enjoy reading genre fiction and are often very intelligent. Those social differenced, though, can be the impetus to bring them together in a game. They understand what it's like to be different from others and enjoy spending time with other people who have similar experiences.

Role-playing is a way to become someone else. It helps to bring players out of their shells. They tend to shed the shyness and speak up about what is on their minds because in a LARP no one will ridicule their ideas. There are different reasons to play a LARP and there are different types of LARPing as well.

Reasons that some of these people like LARPing is that they consider it a sport that they can win. Some just enjoy playing with others who do as well. Most players are similar in that they are very imaginative and creative and want to share stories they have in their minds with others like them. It is a chance to show someone ideas that they have and be accepted by others who do the same thing.

Other players enjoy LARPing that is based on the stories they enjoy reading, or other RPGs they played in the past. It is a good way to escape from the humdrum day-to-day life and become a part of the literature they've always liked.

LARPing is a great way to get involved with fantasy, mystery, or historical stories. People who have a passion for fictional stories can immerse themselves in fictional world so much that they can start to believe they belong there. It's a lot like getting to know the characters of the story in a way that passive reading just can't emulate.

In general terms, there are three types of LARPers: the dramatist, the gamer, and the immersionist. The dramatist enjoys acting out in any scene, the gamer gets the most from the battle scenes and solving puzzles, and the immersionist looks to maintain the authenticity and atmosphere of the characters and world background.

Overall, many people like LARPing and find a great deal of enjoyment from acting out different roles in different settings from stories of different genres. It's a great way to lose oneself in a character or story.
