While there may be no single acid reflux cure that works for everyone, there are enough treatment options that everyone can expect to get relief with a little bit of effort.
As a reminder, the pain of heartburn is caused by stomach acid backing up (refluxing) into the esophagus. The esophagus is very sensitive to this acid. The pain of heartburn really is result of an acid burn of the esophagus.
With the underlying problem mine, you can probably think of the type of things you need to do to prevent acid reflux and heartburn. Of course it makes sense to avoid any triggers that you might have. You also want to do what you can minimize a tendency toward reflux. And finally you can reduce or neutralize the acid in the stomach so if reflux occurs it is and as damaging.
The most common trigger of an episode of reflux is food. In general, acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus juices are the most troublesome. As you might expect, spicy foods can also be problematic, but certain spices can actually be helpful.
As I mentioned, you want to take whatever steps you can to reduce the amount reflux that happens. One way to do this is by avoiding large meals. A large meal increases the pressure in the stomach, making reflux much more likely.
Another good way to minimize the reflux is to avoid lying down immediately after meals. When you're upright gravity helps prevent reflux. If you lie down with a full stomach, reflux happens easily.
This is why reflux often causes the most problems at night. In addition to avoiding eating shortly before going to bed, using an acid reflux wedge pillow may be all you need to eliminate the problem
You're probably well aware that you can use antacids to help with reflux. Liquids are generally more effective but tablets or capsules a more convenient. Either form works by neutralizing acid has already been released.
Newer medications, which are available in both over-the-counter and prescription strength, prevent acid from being released in the first place. Since they don't work very well once an episode of heartburn is started, they are usually taken regularly until the reflux is under control.
I hope this is given you some ideas about what you can do for your acid reflux.
