sessions, and rowdy dorm parties, there is the "freshman 15". The freshman 15 is the 15 or so pounds most students gain their first year of college, mostly attributed to eating junk food, not getting enough physical activity, and of course drinking alcohol. There are, however, 10 things you can do to avoid putting on this weight and remaining healthy.1. I was astounded my first year at the wide array of food offered in the campus cafeteria, all you can eat no less. Trust me; this isn't the high school lunch you may be used to. Try to avoid foods that are fried and loaded with sugar. Even though most of the food is unhealthy, they do serve fruit and vegetables; so try to get at least 1 serving of both with each meal.2. A lot of schools have a food court near their classrooms that contain many fast food venues. Search out their menus and look for healthier options, such as salads or lower calorie versions of their other products. Most places have nutritional values posted or you can find them at their website, this will aid you in seeing which options are healthier.3. Watch portion sizes, and avoid going back for seconds.4. While you may be watching what you eat, don't forget to watch what you drink. Sodas and energy drinks are loaded with sugar and empty calories. One can of soda contains almost 150 calories with 49g of sugar. If you are drinking several of these a day, the calories will add up and you could be taking in almost 500-600 empty calories. Instead of regular sodas, switch to diet; an even better alternative would be water. If you don't like plain water, purchase a water bottle and fill it with lemon juice or sugar- free drink packets, like Crystal Light.5. While hanging out in the dorms or studying, avoid snacking on pizza, chips, or candy. Healthier alternatives would be fruits, vegetables, butter free popcorn and pretzels.Avoid the Freshman 15
