Basic Principles Of Interior Design

by Pamela Hilton

The interior design of any personal or office space should take care of many vital aspects. Strict adherence to the guidelines given below will help in tackling with a majority of these aspects. Each of these has a special role to play and it may be used in several ways depending on the kind of place you are dealing with.

Unity: As per this principle, while designing the interiors, care must be taken to maintain consistency in the overall design, as a structure must be treated as one entity, which is divided into multiple parts by walls. The core theme should never be lost sight of.

Balance: This deals with the optimal distribution of different items in an area. It is important to put things with comparable visual character at carefully chosen positions to get that ideal balance from a particular point. There are three types of balance. The easiest one to accomplish and the most traditional one is symmetrical balance. The next is asymmetrical, which needs a lot of imagination, but is increasingly popular. A radial balance is the third kind, which is achieved by defining a centre and positioning objects around that.

Proportion: This deals with the relative dimensions of items in a space. It is vital that a majority of objects in a space be proportional to each other. A lack of proportion will cause the room to give up its overall attraction as certain articles will be too prominent, while others may stay hidden in the background.

Focus: Good quality interior design requires a focus in the room. Focal objects can be anything ranging from a furniture item to a beautiful painting or some other art work. The item must be such that it is significant in the overall design of the room and is able to grab the attention of the observer. It should be appealing without seeming irrelevant in the room.

Rhythm: Having a rhythm too is very essential for attaining a good design. This means that the room must have a discernible visual pattern and clear continuity. Using several curves, ornate walls or floors, decorative fixtures at carefully chosen distances, alternate colours etc can help accomplish a perceptible rhythm.

If enough attention is given to these tenets, you can be sure that the interior designing exercise will be successful. It is advisable to engage a good interior design expert who can handle all these factors and also help you with the details.
