With the economy being in dismal state, many people go back to college to become more competitive and qualified. Unfortunately, college tuitions are pretty high these days and so are the prices of school supplies and textbooks.
An average student spends close to a thousand dollars for textbooks every year. Books should not be that expensive. Thankfully, there are ways to get them for cheap.
The golden rule of every frugal student is not to buy new books. Unless you are obsessed with new books and will not accept anything that used to belong to someone else, there is no reason to buy brand new books. Especially in your college bookstore.
Publishers are trying to make money on students, so they make sure there is a new edition of each book at least every other year. If you do need a new edition of the book and used books are not available yet, go to places like Half.com or Textbook.com and search for your textbooks there. You will save at least one fourth of your money, shipping included, by doing that.
Another thing many frugal students do is talking to their professors and asking if they could use a previous edition of the textbook. Usually, new editions are not that much different from the previous ones and professors know it. Just check with your teacher prior to class and if they give you a green light, purchase a previous edition.
Sometimes you can find previous edition textbooks for 90% cheaper than the new one. Check Textbook.com or Amazon for great savings.
If you know some people who took the class before, ask them to lend the book to you, or to sell it for a reasonable price. Most students will be happy to do it.
Do not neglect these simple tips, because they can save you tons of money, which you can spend for other pleasant things, such as a night out with your classmates.
