How to Select a Recumbent Bicycle

The Wonderful World of Recumbent BicyclesLet's talk recumbents! Recumbents are those odd looking bicycles being ridden by people with funny grins on their faces. The bike looks like someone has attached a lawn chair to their bicycle, and your first thought is that the poor rider must
have some type of physical ailment... Wrong! These riders have found what they believe is the ultimate bicycle. I own a bike shop. Over the years I have heard the same complaints about bicycles. The two biggest issues are comfort and speed. On one hand people want comfort. To these riders everything hurts, their backs, butts, palms and necks. On the other, some bikers want speed. The faster the better! If either type describes you, maybe a recumbent is in your future. A recumbent offers the comfort that you've been searching for, and the speed that will surprise you. Recumbents are offered in 2 wheel, 3 wheel (trikes) and 4 wheel models (quads). This article will look at the 2 wheel version. The first thing people notice about recumbents are their big seats. All of the styles we will look at have comfort that has to be experienced to be believed! Two wheel recumbents are available in 4 basic styles or wheelbases. First is the short wheelbase or SWB model. The SWB models are very quick handling. They offer a sports car feel but may be intimidating to new recumbent riders. The next style is the compact long wheelbase or CLWB. In a car analogy, this is the sedan of recumbents. It rides and feels the closest to a regular bicycle. It has a predictable ride, is easy to balance, and is a good choice for many beginner recumbent riders looking to get "bent".How to Select a Recumbent Bicycle
