How To Treat Psoriasis Scalp

by Kelly Limpert

Scalp psoriasis occurs when the skin cells grow too quickly and cause red lesions to appear. It is a common form of psoriasis, affecting about half of the people with psoriasis. It is not confined to the neck, but can be found around the ears, on the forehead, and on the neck. There is no cure, but there are many psoriasis scalp treatments, such as natural treatments, topical steroids, and tar products.

One of the most common psoriasis scalp treatments is tar products. Many tar products, such as shampoo, can be purchased over-the-counter, but stronger concentrations can be prescribed by your doctor. Tar products are especially effective against mild forms of psoriasis. To use a tar shampoo, simply massage it onto your scalp and let stand for about five minutes before rinsing it off. Tar products can stain bedding and have a strong and unpleasant odor, but they do lack the side effects of steroids and are a safe and effective way of treating scalp psoriasis.

If your scalp psoriasis is severe, your doctor may prescribe topical steroids. These can be applied to the scalp by being in creams, sprays, lotions, gels, foams, or ointments. While effective, not all steroids can be used on a continued basis. Some may have serious side effects.

Since you apply psoriasis scalp treatments directly to the scalp, you must use caution to avoid getting any in the eyes or ears. Medications may be alcohol based or water based and some are specifically designed for the scalp.

A simple psoriasis scalp treatment you can try at home is using warmed olive oil on your scalp. Massage it in to loosen plaques before washing your hair. This can safely be used with any doctor prescribed treatment.

One psoriasis scalp treatment option is UV light therapy. Unfortunately, hair can often get in the way of effective UV light therapy. If you have thin hair, a shaved head, or use many parts in your hair, this might be an option. There are also UV combs that can also be used.

Although scalp psoriasis is a serious problem for many people, a combination of psoriasis scalp treatments, including tar products, topical steroids, and natural remedies can help control the lesions, scaling, and itchiness. Work closely with your doctor to find the combination that works best for you.
