Nine Simple Shiny Hair Ploys

by Suzan K Bishop

Question: I would say my hair is drab and dull most days. Yet those models in hair product commercials have hair that is so shiny you need sunglasses. How can I get hair that is shiny like that?

Obviously the type of hair you have affects how shiny it is. In other words curly hair isn't going to gleam in the sun under the best of circumstances. But let's see if we can't help. Because there are actually a few tricks you can do to make your hair shinier. Well, nine of them to be exact.

For starters it helps to know that styling products and eating habits play a huge role in shine.

Does your diet include sufficient lefty greens and fresh fruit? Including more greens plus whole grains and oily fish is bound to help.

Some claim sprinkling ground flax, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, over their breakfast cereal can bump up the shine quotient.

Did you know if your locks have been damaged by too much time on a hot iron your hair's cuticle will deflect, not reflect, light?

You can apply shine serum both before and after you blow dry to make your strands more shiny and sassy.

Product build up doesn't help with sleekness much either. So a clarifying shampoo can help get rid of that while making your hair more receptive to hydrating conditioners. Try washing with one every other week.

Another thing to try is a weekly conditioning mask. Deep conditioning like that can amp up the shine like you won't believe.

Look for products that have jojoba oil in them. It's similar to the oils your scalp produces naturally. This can leave your hair looking shinier too without weighing it down.

UV rays can wreck havoc on your hair just like they are hard on your skin. So you want to keep them away from it by using a shine spray formulated with UV filters too.

Speaking of which, you can make use of that shine spray one of two ways. You can either mist it into the air and walk through the mist cloud letting it settle on your hair. Or mist your hair brush with it and then run that through your hair.

So there you have it. Nine secrets that can give you hair with a million dollar shiny hair in no time. Or everything you need to know to make your mane silky, shiny and smooth.
