By definition, it is the physical dependence on a chemical substance. Without it, we go through withdrawal symptoms. But how does it work? I believe that this question is important in the understanding in drug addiction and in educating the masses. So let's begin by explaining neurotransmitters. These are little molecules that relay messages from one brain cell to another by binding to receptors situated on these brain cells. We have many neurotransmitters. Some of them relay messages that excite one part of the body, while others relay messages that inhibit another part of the body. Others relay messages to increase our heart rate and blood pressure. These neurotransmitters are produced naturally by our own bodies. When a drug is administered into the body, they begin to act much like the neurotransmitters found in our bodies. They can enhance or inhibit the effects of the natural neurotransmitters by binding to the receptors found in brain cells. This upsets the natural balance in our bodies and produces adverse effects.Vicious Circle: The Sad Truth About Drug AddictionOriginally from: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2024936/vicious_circle_the_sad_truth_about.html
