Dustin Nippert Comes Through for Texas

Dustin Nippert stated his justification for keeping the number 5 role in the Texas Rangers' starting rotation in the Rangers' 5-2 win on winningest of Toronto in the 1st portion of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next to pitch, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st start because departing the rotation in early June for the disabled list.

Nippert showed far better control than in his previous outing last week in Brand new York. In the Bronx, he allowed eleven base runners (4 hits, seven bases on balls) and only forced 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to secure his 5th victory of the season and third as a starting pitcher. Nippert let up 5 hits, and walked just one. He lowered his earned run average as a starting pitcher to 4.43 and overall to 3.91. It was his third quality start in his previous 5 appearances.

Nippert said there genuinely was not a lot variation between how he pitched last week and on Tuesday: "Simply able to pitch strikes. In Yankee Stadium, I believe I pitched one slider successfully. The larger dilemma I found myself in, I tried harder to get beyond it. I was truly going the wrong way. I kept walking guys, trying to pitch that flawless pitch.

"Yesterday, I was able to pitch it in front in the count, behind in the count. Keep the players away from my fastball."

Insisted manager Ron Washington: "I don't suppose he was overthrowing. He was spreading things around with his change-up and his moving stuff. Raised his fastball."

Washington and Nippert mutually confirmed Nippert wasn't throwing to protect his role in the rotation. And Nippert claimed he'll happily start or come out of the bullpen. Because the Texas Rangers are in post-season pursuit, each teammate's function increases in significance.

"I just would like to contribute to this team," he claimed. "It's great for us that we possess further arms currently. Whomever's playing good baseball you could choose to start.
