A Great Start to NFL 2009 Season

by Sandy Rocksath

Someone bring LenDale a towel. I believe he would seek to conceal his head beneath one on his trip away from Pittsburgh.

On an evening in which Troy Polamalu succumbed to a knee injury, Wille Parker and the rest of the Steelers RB unit could not manage to get things going, and Hines Ward managed one thing he rarely does - fumbled during a giant play situation. Ben Roethlisberger was firm in the back field, took some sacks, however ultimately engineered yet one more game winning drive to help Pittsburgh outlast the Titans 13-10 in the football inaugural game.

It didn't begin well for Big Ben and crew; The Titans looked as good as ever and practically locked the Steelers running game down.

Roethlisberger was composed under pressure, though. Yeah, he threw 2 picks (Brett Favre does this all the time, yet there are fans willing to kiss his feet when he comes into a room, so get over it).

However he moreover passed for 363 yards, which included 60 yards on the last drive of the game.

Pittsburgh's defensive unit stepped up and performed when the chips were down, particularly when it came to special teams, where a blocked Rob Bironas FG led to their only touchdown of the game.

Of course, that play cost them Troy Polamalu, but it only set them back for a moment or two.

If Hines Ward had either fallen down or shifted somewhat faster at the climax of his run in the 4th quarter, the game would have concluded sooner.

Although this was too good a game to not go to OT. Both teams had fought their hearts out, both organizations had players sidelined to injury, and overtime seemed the only just way to end the game.

If, , you could deem pro football overtimes fair.

After Pittsburgh won the coin toss, Roethlisberger and company made the most of a winded Tennessee defense, moving downfield for 63 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.
