How to Add Audio to Your Web Site

Maybe you've heard the following phrase: "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

If you decide to add audio, it is important to ensure it supports your overall marketing message and topic.

If you have a content-based website that is targeted towards a specific niche area, adding audio can help increase visitor interest. However, adding audio to a site full of low-quality content will do nothing.

Adding web audio can allow you to:

- Increase newsletter registrations

- Improve purchase conversions

- Provide testimonials about your products and services

- Provide trust and confidence

- Increase your content offering as in a podcast

Website audio is not a substitute for:

- Writing solid content

- Using keyword focused writing

- Completing all your page META tags properly

- Building quality incoming links

Well known Internet marketer Ken Evoy described how the addition of audio increased his landing page conversion rates by 15-30%. In my own case, I saw a 20% increase in registrations when I added audio to my newsletter landing page.

The real question to ask when you feel the need to add an audio button to any particular page is this:

"Will this audio help increase my page conversion rate and add relevance to my visitor's experience?"

If the answer is 'yes', then adding audio may help improve the overall goal of the page.

Where should you use audio?

- Your site's homepage

- Your newsletter signup page

- Your service overview page

- Specific product landing pages

Once you have made a decision on where and how to use audio on your website, you'll need some tools to get you going. Here are some recommendations.

First, you'll want to obtain a good quality microphone. A microphone will plug into your computer and allow you to digitize your voice.

I recommend a USB microphone as virtually every computer these days will have multiple USB ports.

Check out Amazon.com and you'll find some good quality USB microphones in the twenty to thirty dollar range.

Next, you will need an audio editing program that will allow you to record and edit your audio file.

I recommend a program called Audacity. Audacity is a free piece of software that is of high-quality and offers all the basic editing tools you will ever need. No need to pay for a commercial program when something as good as Audacity exists.

Browse to the Audacity website and follow the directions for downloading the program. There are various versions available for download depending on your computer and operating system.

The last item you will need is the actual audio player with audio buttons that you will place on your web page.

I recommend the audio player produced by a company called 1pixelout. This is a very popular player that was initially developed for Wordpress blogs. It can be used on any type of website and can be downloaded free of charge.

Use website audio in moderation and you'll find it can add quality to the visitor's browsing experience and improve conversion rates. Audio can be a great way to build the trust and confidence of your site visitors.
