I have mid back length very curly, very big, very thick hair and I'm looking for a haircut...?

So I love my natural hair. It's thick and curly and I can do anything with it. But it's also dry, and can take a lot of time to manage. My hair pretty much looks like this (It's not actually me though...) http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dreally%2Bcurly%2Bhair%26ei%3Dutf-8%26fr%3Dmy-myy%26xargs%3D0%26pstart%3D1%26b%3D19%26ni%3D18&w=500&h=375&imgurl=static.flickr.com%2F3022%2F3083652432_0bcf42b232.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Feponaaran%2F3083652432%2F&size=211.7kB&name=Hair+Detox-+closeup&p=really+curly+hair&type=JPG&oid=91663a48b92bd302&fusr=eponaaran&tit=Hair+Detox-+closeup&hurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Feponaaran%2F&no=33&tt=3,636&sigr=11iuvpiqf&sigi=11gv8sper&sigb=13ftuigf9&sigh=117ae7325. Its a little bit bigger though when it dries out.

I really would like to get my hair cut to about shoulder length, though I'm dying for the chin length cut as well. For something far easier to manage. How bad would it be for my hair if I cut it to chin length and straightened it daily? Or does anyone have any shoulder length cuts that have worked well with their curly hair?
