Is it normal to have no effect after taking Ecstasy for the first time?

Last night my friend and i took half a pill of ecstasy each. Some other people who had already taken the drug before were having a great time, so my friend and i decided to take another half of the same type of pill. After taking the other half, nothing happened, and we were sober all night long. Is this normal for first-time users?
