Of course we all are aware that sleep is not only important in refreshing our mind, but is critical to our physical health as well. Therefore, the latest survey (titled 'Sleep In America') from the 'National Sleep Foundation', a non-profit organization of researchers, patients and facilities, may leave you amazed.
The annual poll calculates Americans get, on average, just 6.7 hours of sleep a night on a weekday. Additionally, over the course of the last decade, an increasing number of us are getting less than 6 hours sleep per night. Those who get 8 (or more) hours per night is decreasing too.
In our non-stop, 24/7, around the clock world, it's not really surprising that we're sleeping about 1.5 hours less per night than our grandparents did little more than a hundred years ago.
Laid before us are many distractions and forms of entertainment that no generation have had before. So, it's clear why sleep has moved down our priority list. The ready accessibility of technology like the internet, cell phones, Blackberries and other gadgets make it possible to be connected to the world at all hours.
In another survey, it was reported by the American Psychological Association that 52% of 7,000 respondents lost sleep at night as a result of stress.
Of course not getting sufficient sleep results in most of us experiencing irritability and fatigue, as well as leading to poor performance at work, subdued thought processes and less than perfect decision making.
Nearly anyone can improve their sleep quality though, by getting into a a regular sleeping pattern. Go to bed and awake in the morning at a similar time every day- this also applies to the weekend, vacations and holidays.
You should keep the place where you sleep is relaxing, quiet and at a comfortable, constant temperature. Do this and there's a higher likelihood of getting the 8 sleep hours that you require.
