The Legend of Rainmaking and Your brand

by Rikki Dee

Rain- Thats been the prevailing climate here in New York for what feels like aforever! Since when did Seattle and New York have a trade that I wasn't made aware of ?

Since rain was the topic of the day this past June/July it makes me recall a lesson on Branding I viewed given by Ben Mack which I think had the title: "How to Be a Rainmaker" so something similar.

I will attempt to disclose some of the most important topics given at this very informative presentation over the next ensuing articles so stay tuned or check out my blog for updates. The lecture included topics such as: 1) How to Make the Lightning, 2) How to keep the lightning striking and 3) How to Bottle your Lightning.

In case your not familiar who Bejamin Mack is, he is one of the foremost powers that be on Branding currently in the USA. He is considered legendary in certain Ad agency circles for this work. Over the years Ben has held tenure some of the most recognized advertizing agencies aorund and was a Vice President for Brand strategy for a very large corporation.

Essentially, what that means was he was head strategist in charge of a " billion dollar account (that's correct, I said " billion or 500 million dollars)! Do you think he knows what he is talking about? I most certainly do, and not only has he worked magic for the many businesses he has worked for, he is also a professional magician who at the age of 19 was the youngest recipient of the Award of Merit given by the magic castle.

For those unfamiliar with what a rainmaker is, a rainmaker is an individual indian shaman not withstanding who instead of bringing a good harvest for his tribe brings increased revenue to his company by the use of his or her political connections, ability to attract customer therfore making the people he works for happy.

As a marketer your essential obligation is to "up sell" people on their experience or understanding of reality. In Ben Mack's book "Think Two Products Ahead" he discusses how the most valuable branding really only happens only when companies and small businesses think two products ahead rather than just thinking here and now and to build a profitable relationship with your clients or customers through your Brand. The section where Ben teaches how to construct your Legend Platform is worth boat loads more than the price of the book itself!

Your "Brand" (the one called YOU!) is constructed around the notion of a "legend" or tale and somewhere down the road get stronger with the passing time. These stories are acceptable to be conflicting to each other. So, if you had to choose what type of story you would use to make your business sparkle like a diamond (you are reading articles like these to do so correct?) why not have them be legends. How else will you become "Legendary" in your chosen field without them?
