Matching Your Skidsteer And Attachments

by George Ross

A skidsteer is a power source capable of running a wide variety of tasks depending on the attachments affixed to it. This means that to measure a rig's performance, there are a lot of criteria to be considered.

A purchaser therefore needs to understand these various criteria that he needs to consider before arriving into a decision. The intended use of the loader is a very important consideration. It should also include specifications of larger and smaller models from the same manufacturer as well as other competing brands. Comparing heights, hydraulic pressures, hydraulic angles, and engine power are just one of the things a prospective buyer should do.

A specific level of performance is needed from a loader's hydraulic system especially for hydraulically powered attachments. Skidsteers do have a range of hydraulic flows and pressures and the carrier you pick should be able to provide the flow and pressure that fall within the range that your attachment needs.

It is important to consider hydraulic horsepower. This determines the capability of your skidsteer. If a loader provides inadequate power, you can expect a lack luster performance. It can even damage both your loader and the attachment.

Another area to consider is a skidsteer's lifting capacity. Do make sure that your loader will be powerful enough to withstand the attachment's load safely around the work area on all four wheels.

Attachments may not be compatible with some make of skidsteers. Make sure you check manufacturer specifications to prevent the warranty from being voided. Before installing any conversion kit, find out if the company allows the attachment.

Heat is always detrimental to any hydraulic system's performance. Make sure that the heat generated by the attachment will be handled by your loader. There are some manufacturers that do offer optional oil cooling packages.

Skidsteers are used as a power source for attachments that provide a specific purpose. To ensure optimum performance and utilization, be on the lookout for the right carrier at all times.
