My Secret Favorite Football Team

They fell victim to John Elway in the 1986 AFC championship game because of "The Drive". "The Fumble" by Earnest Byner in the '87 AFC Championship game ripped all Browns fans' hearts out and stomped them to death. On the other hand, I was still nearby for them and gave them my shoulder to bawl on.

The Denver Broncos once again on their way to the Super Bowl in 1989. Then again, my beloved Browns were no match for the demons from Denver. Cleveland sank into distress 37-21.

I stuck with them. I followed them during their unsuccessful days during the early 1980's. Bill Belichick, the future builder of the New England Dynasty, was at the wheel but couldn't guide the sinking ship.

The moment our love affair ended happened on November 16th, 1995. Art Modell drove a spike into my Cleveland fandom. They packed up the whole lot and left without wishing us goodbye. One of the NFL's initial teams was now sleeping with Baltimore, Maryland as the "Ravens."

They contributed a lot to my existence. My buddy and I had fun rivalries with the Steelers and Browns. Phone calls after Browns victories. Voodoo NFL cards after Rod Woodson was injured. My comrade's son altering his brown clothing during a playoff game, causing the Browns to lose. Wearing Cleveland Browns clothes to a Patriots game and virtually getting booted for it. Oh the memories. We were great with one another.

Like an old love, they returned to me in '99 . The love affair flames were stoked once again. Thank you Ed Lerner.

The Browns have forever stayed on my football radar. My mistress was on the other hand in my mind as I watched my Pats to three Super Bowls. I constantly hoped the best for them. I continually wanted them to do well.

Romeo Crennel and Willie McGinest went to bring some of the title rebuilding magic. After a pleasing 2007, they began to restore the thrill when they caught my attention.

The honeymoon phase soon finished in 2008. The Browns ended with a 4-12 year with a logjam at qb, the bloopers of Edwards, and the absence of a defense. I sympathized for them. I loved them behind closed doors of course.

Romeo was let go and Eric Mangini has been recruited. I don't feel good about Mr. Whistle Blower Mangini getting together with my beloved team.
