When you shake hands with someone, take hold of that person's hand firmly. How strong your grip is will communicate how confident you are. Establish eye contact but keep an arm's distance away. After a couple of shakes of their hand, briefly pause, and then release your grip of their hand. Use your smile, eyes and tone of voice to communicate a positive image of yourself. However, there are some common variations on this example of a perfect handshake in use by others.
The Trust Me Shake. The person who initiates this is trying to express that they are in control. They'll take hold of your right hand with their right and place their left hand on top like a glove. They're trying to show they're trustworthy yet instead it leads to feeling uncomfortable and overpowered.
The Aggressive Shake. You'll feel both a crush on your fingers plus an overstated up / down movement whilst you're shaking hands. They're sending a message that they believe or know that they are stronger than you are and that they are going to control this situation. Those who shake hands like this desire others to see them as confident but they usually give the impression of being aggressive.
The Slippery Shake. These people dislike shaking hands and want to get it over quickly. They'll take hold of your fingers lightly, then let go, leaving your hand to just hang in mid air. They want to keep you at a distance and probably prefer avoidance of even minimal familiarity with other people.
The Lifeless Shake. This handshake feels as though the person you are greeting has no feeling in their hand. People who do this create a weak impression of themselves. It conveys that they aren't a threat but also that they can't be counted on.
