Understanding Employees' Needs

by Ledley King

Many people are miserable at their career and are poorly motivated because once their primary biological needs are satisfied (the ability to eat and survive), the rest of their needs are unmet (e.g. the need to have mental stimulation and challenges).

To change this it is first necessary to identify the various needs that people have. By individually identifying these needs particular strategies can be made for each to see improved motivation in the workplace.

- Physiological. They include the first requirements of life; air, nourishment and sleep. This is the first reason that motivates people to work hard. If losing employment means a chance of having no money for food or the lose of a home, nearly everyone will naturally be inclined to work harder.

- Safety. Once biological needs are met, people may continue to perform well to the security of their job. However, for most their motivation ends there. After job security is established, the lack of motivation becomes related to other broader needs such as the following.

- Interpersonal. Co-worker compatibility is significant. If relations between employees are sour or generally lacking, boredom results with unmotivated workers going on extended breaks or arriving to work late. Make an effort to plan days outs and teamwork sessions.

- Esteem. Many managers subconsciously neglect this important need. To have happy and motivated workers, it's essential to make them feel important and appreciated. When employees do a good job on a project, reward them.

- Personal Development. Circumstances which challenge the minds of workers and allow opportunities for development are great workplace motivation strategies. Delegate greater responsibilities where possible and set-up some kind of employee incentive program where workers are able to pick up commissions.
