Manchester United is the defending champion in the Premier League and the upcoming season has potential to be one of the best ever. Teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal will provide some tough competition in trying to win the title and preclude Manchester United from becoming champions for the forth time in a row.

Manchester United may have lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez but the interest in the team has never been higher. During its preseason trip through Asia in July, Manchester United drew more than 200,000 spectators. The team is one of the most popular football teams around the world and the number of passionate supporters seems to grow with every year.

The increase in popularity has come with a downside though: it has become more and more difficult to buy Manchester United tickets. Although Manchester United has one of the biggest stadiums in the United Kingdom (with a total capacity of 76,212), almost every game is a sell out and Manchester United tickets have become scarce due to a number of factors.

Only very few tickets are available for every game due to the large number of season ticket holders. For big games against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, or some of the top European teams in the Champions League even fewer tickets are available. These tickets are allocated based on a ballot that One United Members (the official Manchester United fan club) can enter. Anyone can become a member as long as they pay their annual dues but even as a member, it requires a fair amount of luck to receive any tickets through the balloting process.

Unfortunately, the supply of Manchester United tickets will most likely not increase in the near future. There are no plans underway to increase the capacity of Old Trafford and the popularity of the team is unlikely to go down due to its recent successes (three Premier League titles in a row, Champions League Winner in 2006/2007 and Runner-up in 2007/2008).
