Basic Information You Should Know About Offset Printing

by Cesar Tan

Many significant functions in a business such as maintaining flow of information within the company and marketing the offerings of the company require printing service. Offset printing is the most frequently used printing technique and knowing about it is therefore helpful and essential.

Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it less costlier than other technologies and also more popular. This is the reason good printing service suppliers suggest the use of offset printing for bulk prints.

The ink used during offset printing has oil as the medium and is insoluble in water. The offset printing is so called because the designs are transmitted in an indirect way from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the medium.

The process starts by developing the designs. Film negatives were used in the past for making images and then copying them to aluminum based printing plates. In the present times, the printers can make use of the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. This plate is then placed on a cylinder in the proper configuration. Then the water and ink are dispersed on the image plates, in that order. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area receives a thin film of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spread beyond the images.

Next, the image is turned around when it is put on to a rubber blanket which is attached to another cylinder. Afterwards, sheets of paper of required proportions are put together and the rubber blankets transmit the image to the sheets on a third cylinder, where it comes out as the right side.

Last steps of the printing job involve things such as stapling, pasting or organizing the printed sheets according to the instructions of the customer, and any printing company should easily manage these.
