Business Intelligence and Analytics, The Top Priorities for CIOs

by Herbert Schoenek

Recently, IBM conducted their first Global Chief Information Officer Study. For this study, 2598 CIOs from 78 countries,19 different industries and organizations of all sizes were interviewed face-to-face and the results of the survey have been released in September 2009.

The majority of CIOs (83%) want to get better control on their vast amounts of data. They see business intelligence and analytics as the best way to enhance the competitiveness of their company.

The Global CIO Study 2009 reveals the results and other insights of this survey which is by the way the largest face-to-face survey of CIOs ever conducted.

The result of the survey clearly show the increasingly strategic role that CIOs are playing as IT leaders and drivers of innovation and financial growth. As CIOs from 78 different countries and 19 industries attended, this survey really represents the true global aspect of the influence of CIOs and their priorities. The study is titled"The New Voice of the CIO"

Sure enough, reducing IT costs is part of their business, but also mitigating enterprise risks and leveraging automation to lower costs in all areas of the company. In addition, helping to improve the company's overall performance is a very important part of the CIOs role. With an improved business intelligence and analytics solution, he can provide crucial information to all management levels of the business, said Pat Toole, CIO of IBM.

71% of the attending CIOs of the survey plan to make additional investments in areas like risk management and corporate compliance. However, their top priority for the next 12 months is data analytics.

CIOs are increasingly recognized as full members of the senior executive team. They are more actively engaged in helping to set strategies and solving business problems, not only IT related problems.

So, using IT to produce greater business value is vital, bundled with an ongoing focus on lower cost and higher efficiency. This is why an improved business intelligence solution combined with a great analytics tool with excellent visualization is so important.
