Cat Urine Odor Stoppers

by Angela Suarez

Over 88 million American households own cats. Most of those 88 million homes are likely struggling with ways to eliminate cat urine odor.

Even the best behaved cat may try to mark his territory by peeing on a rug, chair, clothing etc. Afterwards it seems like nothing gets rid of the residual smell.

Here you will find simple solutions to do just that!

Cleaning Surfaces with Fabric:

When you find a urine spot, do not rub! First, lay an absorbent towel on top and press to absorb any fluids left. You will need to keep repeating this step until as much liquid is removed as possible.

Next, rinse off the area with warm water (not hot). Again blot this up repeatedly, getting the moisture out.

The final step can take one or two forms. 3% hydrogen peroxide or Vinegar mixed with warm water (1 cup to a half gallon of water) works well to eliminate cat urine odor.

For the peroxide, put some on a cloth and press into the region that has been soiled. Use a different, clean cloth to absorb the peroxide back out of the fabric (note: you may want to test an out-of-sight spot to make sure your fabric will not be damaged by this).

For the vinegar, put the mix in a spray bottle and apply it uniformly. Lay a fresh towel over the area and put some weight on top. Leave that over night then vacuum thoroughly.

For a surface stain only, you can also use baking soda to remove any lingering odor. The only problem with the baking soda is that it is not to be use for deep fabrics, only for surface areas. Let the baking soda sit overnight and sweep up or vacuum the next day.

Repeat this, but the second time take a damp cloth to the baking soda and rub it into the fabric. Let this dry and vacuum again.

Cat Urine Odor vs. Your Rug:

For rugs, you can follow the same protocol as above with fabrics. However, if you still believe that there is any lingering odor then get a steamer to get rid of any traces of cat urine odor.

At pet stores, you can also purchase enzymatic cleaners that will break down the urine odor so that it is neutralized.

Different Floors

Need a solution for floors? Floors are easy, since the fluid cannot penetrate deeper layers. If you know that bleach is safe for your floor then use this option. Just be sure to steer clear of any ammonia products when cleaning up urine. Cats are drawn to the ammonia scent.

Keeping the Box Clean:

One of the best ways to keep cat urine odor away in the first place is to make sure his litter box is A+ clean. Remember, your cat likes cleanliness too! If it is not up to his standards then he will go somewhere else!

If you happen to find another urine stain, clean it up immediately. If not, your cat will come back to that spot repeatedly because of the lingering odor.
