Devils Tower

If you ever seen the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind then you've seen the Devils Tower. It's impossible not to recognize it.Devils TowerRichard Dreyfuss' character sees Devils Tower everywhere he looks. Soon after having the visions he constructs a crew sculpture in his mashed potatoes. Needless to say his family is alarmed. Soon the obsession consumes him. First he makes paintings of it, then he goes off the deep end. His wife takes the kids away after he tosses dirt into the house to make a scale model. Many people remember this scene.Eventually Richard's character travels to Wyoming to see the real Devils Tower. Despite warnings from the military to stay away, he sneaks up to the mountain. There he sees an amazing spectacle. A huge alien vessel lands and communicates through music. People who have been lost for years, not aged a day, come out of the huge ship. Richard decides to enter the ship to learn from the aliens. A sequel or remake has never been begun. There are extra scenes in some versions that show the interior of the vessel. They didn't add much to the movie.Let's discuss the actual Devils Tower. It's in Wyoming. Scientists call it a monolithic igneous intrusion. It can also be called a lava neck. Magma flowing into a volcanic vent creates it. It's a sign that the volcano is active. Some geologists dispute that Devils Tower is such a formation.Devils Tower is a subject of Indian legend. Some bears stumbled on three Indian girls who were picking flowers. The bears chased them. The Great Spirit saved the girls by raising the land where they stood. The Bears would not give up. Every time they made it nearly to the top, they slid back to the bottom. The distinctive indentations in the sides of the tower come from the bears' claws. There's another legend about two young Sioux braves. A great bear named Mato found them. It had claws the size of tepees, and it wanted to eat the boys for breakfast. They asked the creator to offer some help. He raised the ground where they stood. Just as with the stories involving the girls, and this one the giant bear tried to get at them from all sides but could not. Its huge claw marks remain.Devils TowerWhether fantastic tales of giant bears or friendly aliens the Devils Tower is a great place to visit.
