Do you think that a well-timed beatdown can help people put their lives back on track?

I was reading an account from Malaysia about a guy who had become addicted to meth, and ended up trying to rob an undercover cop.

However, instead of simply shooting the guy dead, the cop managed to disarm and control the guy.

Then he was taken down to the police station, and was brutally beaten by several officers. They kicked and punched him until he nearly died. He lost most of his teeth and suffered permanent nerve damage in several limbs due to broken bones that were not reset.

After his beatdown, a medic gave him some basic medical care, and then they threw him into a cell with a bit of food and water to detox. And after that, they released the guy to his family without charge.

Even though the beating was extremely brutal, it helped the guy put his life back on track. He realized that his life had gone haywire, and that the next time he was arrested, the cops would probably beat him until he died.

Do you think more drug addicts all over the world (and not just in Malaysia) would benefit from this type of "tough love"?
