Before I talk about why people lose at online roulette I first need to speak about the house advantage. With European roulette the house edge is 2.56% and with American roulette the house edge is 5.12%
What causes this house edge? It is the green slots otherwise known as the zero. The payouts aren't fair because of the zero, if there wasn't a zero they would be fair and this is what creates the house edge.
I will stick with European roulette for my example. With the house edge being 2.56% that means that over one hundred spins you can expect to lose 2.56 if you were only betting 1 a time. But people lose a whole lot more than this and it is because they play against their odds rather than with them.
Most online roulette players have a bad habit of increasing their bets after a loss. They do this because if they win with the increased bet it will cover the previous loss and they will still be in profit. This eventually leads to a very big loss and should be avoided.
It may not be very exciting but the best bet that a player can make is to just pick red or black and then just place a flat bet on it on every single spin. If you do this you can expect to lose to the house edge.
In reality it is unlikely that in a game of a few hundred spins you will get the same number of reds and blacks and a few zeros in the middle breaking them up. This is how you can win. If you were betting on black and more blacks game up than reds this would mean you would be in profit.
So long as you play with the odds as much in your favour you won't be stung too badly. Many people have gone bankrupt at the roulette tables trying to device a system. Roulette should be played for fun and entertainment and should never be seen as a business.
