Siddhartha: A choppy rendition of the Hermann Hesse novel that follows an Indian as he leaves his family to a find more stimulating life. This film is too artsy, although on-location photography by Sven Nykvist is often illuminating. Cast includes Shashi Kapoor, Simi Garewal, Romesh Shama, Pinchoo Kapoor, Zul Vellani, and Amrik Singh. The Great McGinty: This film was Sturges' directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) and isn't up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor's chair by crooked politicians and then blows it all by trying to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)
Hannibal Rising: Here we see Hannibal as a youngster at the end of WW2 when he witnessed Nazi collaborators abusing his younger sis! As a youthful adult (Ulliel), empowered by his Japanese mothers sibling, he hunts down the killers and imposes cruel reprisal. A good piece of work however ponderous, dull and over donel, albeit on no account as gory as may be anticipated. Cast includes Gaspard Ulliel, Rhys Ifans, Gong Li, Helena Lia Tachovska, Dominic West, Aaron Thomas, Kevin McKidd, and Richard Brake. (121 minutes, 2007)
Mother: Sad youthful female who lives with her mom plans to carry out suicide. Her mom invests the day trying to keep her from doing it. Well performed, prompted, and revised, although still just a stage drama. Cast includes Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. (96 minutes, 1986)
La Nuit de Varennes: Clever historical legend has such renowned personalities as Casanova and Thomas Paine cross roads at the time of the French Rebellion. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Jean-Louis Barrault, Hanna Schygulla, Harvey Keitel, and Jean-Claude Brialy. (133 minutes, 1982)
Senso: Cautiously paced research of human feelings, chronicling the relation between earthy, materialistic Austrian officer Granger and his aristocratic Italian mistress (Valli). The film is an enthralling union of the neo realism of Visconti's earlier work and the lush romanticism often discovered in his later films. Cast includes Alida Valli, Farley Granger, Massimo Girotti, and Heinz Moog. (115 minutes, 1954)
