The PSP UMD Movie Dilemma

by Paul Cameron

Ever since the PlayStation Portable (PSP) was launched, individuals have been interested in much more than the games that could be played on it. There was also a lot of demand for the PSP UMD movies that it could play. Think about it - there are likely more movies on the market in this format than there are other PSP stuff like the actual games. And the spin-off has been software programs that can convert movies into a format that is playable on these systems, such as PSP Movie Creator.

But by early 2006, sales of PSP UMD movies and other similar products had decreased so much that the big manufacturers were slashing their production, selling the movies at a lower cost and even giving them away. So what happened to cause this decline? When you look at it, it is really quite apparent. It's just like the circumstances the CD and DVD industries are facing, where folks download music and movies rather than purchasing a physical product. There does not seem to be any point to paying money for something that you can get free of charge.

The manufacturers of these digital PSP UMD movies evidently didn't see this coming. The same thing occurred in the music industry when individuals started downloading songs, for which there were plenty of free sources. So the PSP UMD movie industry has virtually ground to a halt caused by the great number of internet sites where you can download illegal copies of movies to play on your console.

The industry tried to rebound by producing hard-to-find movies that were maybe only available on outdated media. Some companies resorted to creating websites where movies can be viewed by streaming for a small cost. But it hasn't made much difference to those who simply don't want to pay for their entertainment.

There is no shortage of sites on the internet where a movie can be converted to PSP format and downloaded. And it's not just on the internet that you can get these movies for free. You can buy a software program that will effortlessly convert your regular movie files to PSP UMD format. Even though this is technically illegal, it's still a popular practice. And once they've converted the movie, they upload it to share with others. There are so many options to getting a movie that it almost seems crazy to do so.

The only solution to this dilemma would be to have an internet watchdog agency that traces these unlawful downloads. No doubt the movie manufacturers would like to be involved in something like this. Moreover, there must be stronger enforcement of the laws against pirated copyright material. Of course, it is not difficult to come up with a solution, but implementing it is another story. If you want to do your bit to keep the PSP UMD movie industry alive, just pay for your movies instead of sharing them.
