Spacey's directorial debut presents an excellent cast and gets off to a promising start, however it sputters to a dramatic stop midway through. King of Jazz: Million dollar musical revue, shot in 2-color Technicolor format, is filled with bigger-than-life production numbers and remarkable melodies. Highlights contain Walter Lantz's animation pattern, Joe Venuti's swing violin, youthful Bing Crosby with the Tempo Boys, and, obviously, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" which in early Technicolor is more a rhapsody in turquoise. Outbreak: deadly virus has hit Cedar Creek, California. Highly transferable, in a short time the virus is spreading fast. The other problem, once infected you have less than 24 hours to live. The virus must be contained, so people are sequestered if they are near the outbreak areas.
Executive Decision: A 747 with 400 passengers has been hi-jacked. One intelligence analyst thinks the terrorist plan to drop nerve gas on the nation's capitol. If he is right, the plane must be stopped.
Good Will Hunting: Four buddies hang out together in South Boston, although one of them has an uncommon present: he's a prodigy. When math professor Skarsgiird gets wind of this, he demands that the youthful guy halt trashing his abilities, and sends him to a psychologist! Professor Williams tries to fracture his brittle shell. This is a well-performed fiction written by co-stars Damon and Ben Affleck that doesn't fall short with a lack of excellent characters. Cast includes Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck,Minnie Driver, SteIlan Skarsgiird, Casey Affleck, and Cole Hauser. (126 minutes, 1997)
Alaska: Adolescent venture on a grand scale, as a brother and sister take off looking for their dad and his downed plane. Structured like an old B movie melodrama, however implemented with conviction contrary to magnificent, snowy landscape and characterizing an irresistible polar bear who befriends the youngsters. Heston, whose child prompted the drama, plays a mean, cunning old man. Cast includes Thora Birch, Vincent Kartheiser, Dirk Benedict, Charlton Heston, Duncan Fraser, and Gordon Tootoosis. Money Train: Two unlikely foster brothers John, a black man, and Charlie, a white man, are both transit cops in New York. Charlie is up to his neck in bad gambling debts, and he decides it is time to do something he and John always dreamed about. Rob the money train. Will he be able to pull it off?
