What is the difference between crank and crystal meth??? how can you turn the crank into crystal?

I know there is good crystal meth and there is crank. How can you tell what you have. It could be anything. When you smoke it should it look or melt a certain way? Can you do anything with dirty speed or is it a lost cause?
